Updated: Jun 22, 2023

Liver disease can present with a variety of signs and symptoms, depending on the specific condition and the stage of liver damage. Here are some common signs and symptoms associated with liver disease:

  1. Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes due to an accumulation of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced by the liver.

  2. Fatigue and weakness: Feeling tired and lacking energy even with minimal physical activity.

  3. Abdominal pain and swelling: Discomfort or pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen, along with swelling or bloating.

  4. Nausea and vomiting: Feeling queasy, experiencing an upset stomach, and occasionally vomiting.

  5. Loss of appetite and weight loss: A decrease in appetite leading to unintentional weight loss.

  6. Changes in bowel movements: Bowel habits may change, resulting in diarrhea or constipation.

  7. Dark urine: Urine may appear darker than usual, often described as tea-colored or brownish.

  8. Pale-colored stools: Stools may become pale or grayish due to a decrease in bile pigment production.

  9. Swelling in the legs and ankles: Fluid retention leading to swelling in the lower extremities.

  10. Itchy skin: Persistent itching, also known as pruritus, can occur due to a buildup of toxins in the blood.

  11. Easy bruising and bleeding: A liver disorder can impair the production of clotting factors, resulting in easy bruising and prolonged bleeding.

  12. Spider veins: Small, spider-like blood vessels may become visible on the skin due to increased pressure in the liver.

  13. Mental confusion and cognitive problems: In advanced stages, liver disease can cause cognitive impairment, memory problems, and confusion.

It's important to note that these symptoms are not exclusive to liver disease and can occur in other conditions as well. If you experience any persistent or concerning symptoms, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis.
